SHORT HISTORY OF LANDAN

F’yew banwa e Landan…Landan is a nice place.
Fye kakel di Landan… Welcome to Landan.

Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato has been endowed by nature with beautiful and fascinating places, where most of the residents had never reach or had a chance seeing this.

About 30 to 45 minutes ride on a jeepney or private cab one will be able to reach Barangay Landan, passing through Dole Cannery, alongside pineapple plantations. One will feel the gentle breeze of the air, invigorating and can lull them to sleep.

Barangay Landan, had its origin which dates back before 1935. It got its name from a tree named barak (Datal Barak) When it was created as Barangay, its name was derived from the word (E-el Landan), covering an area of almost Ten thousand (10,000) hectares its East of Malungon, West of Klinan, North of

Maligo and the South Datal Bila and Miasong.

B’laan tribes were the first settlers and were headed by Bungan Ante who served as the “Datu or Hsad” of the place. As early settlers, they were composed of five families namely Bungan Ante, Tony Mungca, Rafitan Malasogue, Orus Malayon and Fulis Bagon. They occupied the plain area which was called “Datal Barak”.

The place was blessed with a rich vegetation thick forest, with flora and fauna. Wild animals like wild pigs, birds and eagles used to abound the place but now are already endangered species. Today eagles are navar seen.

In the year 1958, the settlers were joined by three other families namely Donato Quinto Sr., Jesus Villalon Sr., and Thomas Loayon. They were then the first Cebuanos who became the acid friend of B’laan early settlers. Its settlement and development sprung out of the Presidential decree 762 under President Carlos P. Garcia. The place was declared as B’laan reservation Area, for the B’laan had no permanent place to call their own.

Politically, the place was ruled by the “Tenyente Del Bario” in 1950. The first Datu Bungan Ante was appointed by the settlers. He was succeeded by Casiano Masalon through a “Viva Voce” Votation. After his death in 1957, Venancio Dianga Sr. took over the position. However the leader irrevocably resigned in 1959, and again Venancio Dianga Sr. assumed the leadership.

On July 5,1961, President Carlos P. Garcia proclaimed the place as B’laan Reservation Area and as a Barangay. It was then an exciting year for other settlers who came to the place like the Ilongos, Muslims and other tribes.

Unfortunately, on October 1974, Landan was vacated by the residents due to disputes between the bandits known as “Ilaga” and the “Bama” groups. Nonretheless, it lasted for a year only because of the effort of the Integrated National Police, and the Philippines Constabulary. The residents who evacuated to the surroundings areas came back in1975. It was year of jubilation. In 1976, Venancio Dianga Sr. resumed his leadership until 1985. He was succeeded by Rudy D. Ante Sr., through Barangay election with the highest vote. Barangay Landan has a Population of almost five thousand (5,000) people with sixteen(16) sitios. Rusy Ante, Sr. is married to Mameng Malompong and blessed with five(5) children namely; Gerry, Ermis, Rosalinda, Melodina and Rudy, Jr.. He has fourteen (14) grandchildren.
